Unseen Passage for Class 9

HAS THE CHERNOBYL DISASTER AFFECTED THE NUMBER OF NUCLEAR PLANTS BUILT?

Thirty years on from one of the worst radiation leaks in history, several countries have moved to phase out nuclear energy production altogether, and experts say another accident would kill the industry. This week marks 30 years since an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine led to a huge leak of radiation across eastern Europe.

The disaster is thought to have caused thousands of cancer cases. It was the only event classed as a “major accident” by the International Atomic Energy Agency until the 2011 meltdowns in Fukushima, Japan. The data demonstrates its impact : In the 32 years before Chernobyl, 409 reactors were opened, but only 194 have been connected in the three decades since.

There were other factors in play, too. Yes, some of the change was directly down to the disaster in Ukraine. Italy, for example, voted in a referendum soon afterwards to stop producing nuclear energy. However, consultant nuclear engineer John Large says that regulations and transparency demands introduced in the wake of a 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania actually had a bigger impact. “Fukushima will have the same effect,” he says.

The disaster in Japan prompted the German government to phase out its plants, with the last one closing in 2022. “Nuclear energy is failing because it is simply too expensive,” says Dr. Paul Dorfman, senior research fellow at the Energy Institute, University College London. “If there’s another nuclear accident in the next five or 10 years, you can say goodbye to the industry.”

Class 9 English Unseen Passage

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow :

1. Keep your watch accurate. For some people, moving up the time on their watch will help them get up earlier. For others, they will remember that the time on the watch is wrong and will disregard it altogether. It may be helpful to set your watch just two minutes ahead instead of five or ten.

2. Keep a clock, phone, computer or anything that displays time in each room of your house. One of the easiest ways to run late is simply by not realising that the time is passing as quickly as it is.

3. Set all your clock and watches to the same time. Don’t be an optimist. Things usually take longer than what you’d expect, even without major delays. If you have a dinner appointment at 7:30 p.m., don’t think you can work till 7 p.m., then take a bath, dress and reach on time. Realistically, calculate the time you will take at each step and then add 10 minutes more to allow for unexpected delays, or you cannot get to your job in time.

4. Wake up when you are supposed to wake up. Don’t hit the snooze button, keep on lying in bed, and watch TV at the very start of your day. Maybe try even setting your clock 10 minutes earlier than you need. If you have difficulty with this, move your alarm clock to somewhere away from you bed; that way, you have to get up to turn it off. Commit yourself to being 15 minutes early for every thing. If you have to reach your place of work at 8:00, don’t even tell yourself this. Just tell yourself (and every one else who listens—but don’t annoy them or make them think that they are late or early!) “I have to be at work at 7.45.” If you do this, you will be on time even with little unforeseen delays. You will be on time even with a traffic jam.

Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow:

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL

My childhood had always been a sheltered one. My parents along with my teachers, tried to instill good ethics in me. But sharing was one moral value which I was never comfortable with.
“Why should I give?” was my question. During one vacation to my hometown, I was at the railway station with my parents. As we were waiting for a train, something caught my attention. Two small children, perhaps siblings, were seeking alms nearby. Though they appeared at ease, I was shocked by their overall untidiness. When they approached us, my father promptly gave the older one, some money. Those were the days when I was constantly reminded of the virtues of ”sharing‟ things with others. So, when my mother nudged me, I knew why and the look my mother gave me, confirmed. I had a pack of my favorite chocolates in my pocket and, even though I pretended to have forgotten about it, she remembered them. I was devastated. With a heavy heart I fished out one and placed reluctantly on the outstretched hand of the girl. She flashed a smile and the duo moved on. But my gaze never left them as I wanted to know about the fate of my chocolate. After a while I saw her unwrap it. She then did something which moved me. Without a moment’s hesitation, she put the chocolate in her brother’s mouth and watched his face brighten up as he savored it. Her action puzzled me. Why did she not eat it herself? Regret and shame overcame me when I realized that I had deliberately given only one chocolate. I quickly decided to give her one more chocolate voluntarily. Strangely, my action made me feel better than I had thought. As our train approached the station, the girl rushed to give me something. It was a small paper doll which she had made with the wrapper of the chocolates. I was speechless. Was she trying to convey a “Thank you”? That little girl taught me the joy of sharing and also answered one big question of “Why should I give? I now ask Why not, as sharing is all about loving . Happiness abounds when shared.
Years have rolled by and I still cherish that valuable lesson I learnt during that vacation. Sometimes life teaches us things we fail to learn from classrooms. I still think of that girl and her brother and wonder where they would be now….. Those sparkling eyes and beautiful smile.

Unseen Passages for Class 9 English

1. The Delhi 2015 results are extra ordinary for many reasons. Not even in their wildest dreams, would the BJP and the Congress have dreamt of such drubbing. While the Congress was widely expected to lose and be content with a handful of seats, it is the BJP’s drubbing that left everyone shocked. The AAP wave was so powerful that even Kiran Bedi, the BJP’s Chief Ministerial Candidate lost from Krishna Nagar, the safest seat for the BJP.

2. This is the first time after 1977 that a party got more than 50% of the total vote in Delhi. The AAP polled about 54.3% of the total vote which is highest in the history of Delhi elections. The BJP polled 32.2% while the Congress was a distant third with just 9.7% vote. A 22% lead over BJP meant that the AAP virtually decimated both the BJP and the Congress by winning 67 of the 70 seats (more than 95% of the total seats) while the BJP had to be content with just 3 seats. The Congress drew a blank.

3. The 54.3% vote share is the highest in the history of Delhi elections. There have been only two instances in the history of Delhi elections where a party won more than 50% of the votes. First was way back in 1951 during Nehru’s time and the second time was during the Janata Party wave in 1977.

4. Delhi has witnessed three elections from 2013 to 2015; two Assembly elections and one Lok Sabha election in 2014. The change in fortunes of the various parties is fascinating. While the Congress went into decline mode from 2013 to 2015, the BJP peaked during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on the back of a national resurgence. The BJP lost more than 14% of the vote in 2015 compared to the Lok Sabha elections in 2014. Though it managed to get more or less the same vote share as in December 2013, the AAP went so far ahead of BJP that there was 22% difference in the vote share of AAP and BJP this time around. The AAP gained close to 25% vote share compared to December 2013 and 21% compared to the Lok Sabha election in May 2014. (Table 88)

5. As can be clearly seen, the Congress is in a continuous decline while the BJP peaked in 2014 and went down in 2015. The AAP seems to be the only party that has consistently increased its vote share from 2013 to 2015.

Solved Unseen Passages for English Class 9

Read the following passage carefully.

CHILD MARRIAGE: AN EVIL

(1) Child marriages are rampant in North India. They continue to blight the lives of people. Children bound by marriage are victims of blind customs and superstitions prevalent in rural areas and certain urban concentrations among the weaker socio-economic groups. Nothing seems to stop this anti-social practice despite the Child Marriage Act passed as early as in 1929, which makes child marriage a grave offence.

(2) Why do child marriages take place and what can be done to prevent them from happening? The evil thrives because of illiteracy and other related causes—the most important of which is the anxiety of parents to marry off their daughters at the earliest. In many high-illiteracy states, like Rajasthan, the practice of child marriage is in vogue. Akhha Teej is D-day for the parents of minor girls, since, on that day, the parents seek salvation from the anxiety of girls growing up in their midst.

(3) A child marriage is less likely to take place if the parents are literate or at least the father is. He is, then, aware of the legal minimum age for marriage and the health hazards his daughter will face by an early marriage. If the mother, otherwise literate, has been exposed to the importance of family planning, she is also less likely to solemnise her daughter’s wedding before the legal minimum age.

(4) Among the other reasons that parents give away young daughters in marriage is the need, felt especially by families with more than one daughter, to keep wedding expenses down. By marrying two daughters simultaneously, parents save on expenses. Parental anxiety about grown-up (14 years and above) daughters going astray, forces the less educated to give away their female children in marriage.

(5) The Child Marriage Restraint Act in 19710, raised the minimum age of marriage for girls from 15 to 110 years and for boys from 110 to 21 years. The committee, on the status of women, in its report in 1974, had recommended that all offences under the Child Marriage Restraint Act should be made cognizable and special officers be appointed to enforce the law.
(6) The crux of the problem is that the role of a girl-child in traditional rural areas is circumscribed around marriage and motherhood.

Unseen Passage Class 9 English Pdf

Read the following passage carefully.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE SPARROWS GONE?

(1) They were once everywhere. Chirping and flapping their wings at the window sills, on top of cupboards, and on the branches of trees. Where have all the little sparrows gone? This is the most frequently asked question about sparrows these days.

(2) The association between humans and house sparrows dates back to several centuries and no other bird has been associated with humans on a daily basis like the house sparrow. It is a bird that evokes fond memories of childhood. The nests of sparrows dotted almost every house in the neighbourhood as well as public places like bus stands and railway stations, where they lived in colonies and survived on food grains and tiny worms.

(3) A study conducted by the Andhra University, Vishakhapatnam, highlighted the fact that the population of sparrows had fallen by over 60 per cent even in the rural areas of coastal Andhra Pradesh. A survey conducted by the British Trust for Ornithology showed that the house sparrow’s population in Britain has declined by about 510 per cent since 1970.

(4) Certainly, there is no single reason for the decline of the house sparrows. Mobile tower radiation and excessive use of chemical fertilizers are aggravating the problem and have been identified as potent sparrow killers.

(5) It is said that sparrow chicks, which require insect food for their survival in their early days, have not been getting adequate supply from their parents. This has triggered large scale death of chicks, leading to a gradual decline in their population.

(6) Urban landscape too, has been dramatically altered over the years. No longer are sparrows able to find the tiny nooks, crannies, and holes where they used to build their nests.

(7) Typically, sparrows were never an issue of concern for us with their diminutive presence in our household. Perhaps, it is this diminutive presence because of which even their gradual disappearance has gone unnoticed. Mohammed Dilawar is rightly called the Sparrow Man of India as he has been successful in drawing the attention of the world towards the declining number of house sparrows.

(8) House sparrows are an important bioindicator and their decline is a grim reminder of the degradation of the urban environment and the danger from it to the humans in the long run.
